    Warehouse Security Camera Planning

A warehouse camera plan has to work across long sightlines, changing inventory, active equipment and transitions between indoor and outdoor conditions. Start with the questions footage should answer, then map views and infrastructure to those operating realities.

    Plan from actual conditions

The details that change the design

    Planning factor / 01

    Aisles and pick zones

Tall shelving can block a view that looks clear on a floor plan. Mark aisle ends, cross-aisles, picking areas and intersections; consider whether the goal is to see movement through a zone or more detail at a particular work point. Verify camera height, lens, obstruction and lighting in the actual layout.

    Planning factor / 02

    Docks, doors and yard transitions

Receiving and shipping doors combine movement, backlight and frequent changes in door position. Assess the approach, threshold and interior activity as separate views where needed. Exterior views require suitable equipment placement, weather exposure review and a dependable cable route.

    Planning factor / 03

    Lighting changes by shift

Daylight at a dock, high-bay fixtures, dark aisle ends and overnight operation can produce very different images. Review representative conditions and whether color, motion detail or a broad overview matters most. A daytime walkthrough alone cannot confirm after-dark performance.

    Planning factor / 04

    Recording and network capacity

Camera count is only one input to storage. Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, compression, activity, recording schedule and usable drive capacity all affect retention. Network switching and PoE capacity, cable pathways and recorder placement should be checked before promising reuse or duration.

    Before a walkthrough

    Useful details to gather

    • Mark priority aisles, cross-aisles and inventory zones on a current floor plan.
    • Identify dock doors, exterior approaches and areas with changing daylight.
    • Share operating hours, shift changes and the events footage is expected to clarify.
    • Note available network closets, cable routes, recorder location and IT coordination.
