    Contractor Yard Security Camera Planning

A contractor yard combines open space, changing equipment positions, gates, storage and exposed infrastructure. The plan should test what can actually be seen after dark and how each camera can be powered, connected and protected—not simply place cameras at the perimeter.

    Plan from actual conditions

The details that change the design

    Planning factor / 01

    Gate, approach and staging views

Map vehicle and pedestrian approaches, gate positions, equipment staging and loading points. Wide views can establish activity across an area; a more constrained view may be needed for a specific detail. Trees, trailers, stacked materials and parked vehicles change the scene, so review likely seasonal and operating configurations.

    Planning factor / 02

    Night visibility and weather

Assess ambient lighting, glare from vehicle lights, shadows and the camera's intended night mode. Check exposure to rain, dust, wind, vibration and direct sun, along with mounting stability and service access. An image that looks suitable in daytime may not show the detail needed overnight.

    Planning factor / 03

Power and connectivity at the perimeter

Identify available power, cable pathways, mounting structures and distances back to network equipment. Wired Ethernet/PoE may be appropriate where the route and switching support it; a wireless link or other arrangement must be assessed for distance, obstructions, power and reliability. Internet access is distinct from local camera-to-recorder connectivity.

    Planning factor / 04

    Recorder placement and retrieval

Select a protected recorder location with practical network access and a plan for authorized playback and export. Estimate storage using actual recording settings, activity, schedule and usable capacity—not a generic days-of-retention claim. Consider who can retrieve footage when the yard is closed.

    Before a walkthrough

    Useful details to gather

    • Mark gates, approaches, equipment zones and high-obstruction areas on a site sketch.
    • Note mounting structures, distances, power availability and likely cable routes.
    • Describe overnight lighting, vehicle movement, weather exposure and service access.
    • Identify the protected recorder location and authorized clip-retrieval contact.
